Maryruth was born in 1958 and grew up where the lower Mojave and upper Sonoran deserts meet in Southern California, about 15 miles from the border with Mexico. In these wide open spaces she grew to love both nature and the flavors and colors of Mexico. In addition to living in the desert, she has lived, at various times, in places along the Pacific Coast, and places along the Arkansas River. She currently lives in the foothills below the front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In each of these spaces she has been inspired by the natural beauty around her–in awe of both creation and the Creator.

She began painting as a child, and has frequently chosen as her subject matter the beauty of the raw landscapes surrounding her. She works in oils, watercolors, acrylics, digital & mixed media. In addition to her landscapes, she occasionally does some florals, still lifes and portraiture. She loves bold colors and attempts to “capture the essence of the divine” she sees reflected in life and nature around her. More recently she has begun broadening her style to include abstract paintings where she attempts to “capture the essence and rhythm of relationships and life”.

Maryruth views the creative process in her artwork as a spiritual journey. She describes her own process in the creation of art as a collaborative process between herself and the indwelling of the ‘Spirit of life’ within her as together ‘they’ attempt to portray the sacred moments in life where humanity and divinity meet–a sunrise over the ocean, a quiet walk in the woods, a kiss from one you love, or even the splash of color of an untamed brush stroke in an abstract painting. The unifying concept found throughout her artwork is an “attempt to draw the viewer in to that sacred place where one seeks to touch and perhaps even know God,” as reflected in color, form, line, rhythm & movement on the artist’s canvas.
